ELECTION BLUES

As the election lurches and looms to some sort of conclusion it becomes apparent that despite the creditable inroads of the Liberal Democrats the deep seated conservativisim of the majority will prevail. Despite all the corruption and self evident failings of the unfettered market which still is refered to as if it is a given and is unalterable, a broadly conservative reassertion of the primacy of the financial reality being the only reality and a rhetoric of ' difficult choices ' and 'austerity' mask a refusal to fundamentaly reassess and revalue how our society is structured.
Instead a reversion to pre-crisis acceptance of vast inequality, unaccountable private financial interests calling the shots and a blind acceptance that this mythological beast 'the market' will 'recover' and there will be jobs for all.
I note with utter dejection that virtualy all the British newspapers are backing the Conservatives. I also note that there seem to be a lot of high fences being errected and burglar alarms being installed around the immediate vicinity.
I am no big fan of Gordon Brown but Sky sticking a radio mike on his lapel and broadcasting off the cuff remarks would seem to be a blatant deliberate dirty trick, strange it never happened to Cameron. Another small observation, listening to an interview on the BBC radio with Nick Clegg I was wondering why there was such a protracted series of questions about wether he believed in God. Then I read The Telegraph pointing out in a shock-horror manner that his Spanish wife is a fully paid up Catholic and it became clear : the establishment fear that Nick, should he somehow get into a position of power, might be one.
We have had the most conservative and least egalitarian Labour government that has ever been, now, unless there is a huge swing to the Liberal Democrats, it looks like a return to the intellectual pygmies of the actual Conservatives, who are plainly and simply incapable of progresive policy in politics or in society, which they have recently apparently discovered does exist, but for some reason has been renamed as 'Big.' Its hard to smile.
