BIZZARE JOB SEEKING ACTIVITIES
There are now contracted agencies to which people are refered after a certain period of unemployment. Thus far this has been a series of uncordinated non-events involving much sitting waiting for something or someone to indicate what one is supposed to be doing. On more than one occasion I have turned up at the appointed time and then been sent away. On other occasions a ' one to one ' interview has been 15 minutes of general discussion and then leaving none the wiser.
Most recently I have been attached to a group and have to attend twice a week. The coach, for that is what the organizer is called, admitted that he has no special skills and has been in the same position as the members of the group, ie unemployed for a long period. He is nice enough and conceeds that no one wants to be here. On the last visit he gave us a film to watch. It was a regular American box office release, not something dreamed up for the situation. It was a morning session and I never usualy watch television or a film at that time of day. That was the entire morning. Then we were given some printed information on jobs and a ticket to come in the following week. All in all a bizzare way to spend a morning with no clear purpose whatsoever.
The reality is that without actual jobs being avaliable these are a sort of holding operation that allow access to some facilities, internet and phone, and some social interaction, but little else.
Someone in the main area started playing the guitar at one point, but this was then stopped.
A somewhat strange situation altogether.
